After spending a restful night at Iowa 80, we continued our westward drive, eager to see what the day would bring. Our first stop of the day, though unplanned, turned out to be a fascinating detour: the Herbert Hoover Historic National Site. Nestled in the serene landscape, this site marks the birthplace of Herbert Hoover, the 31st President of the United States. We explored the grounds where he grew up and his Presidential library was built, gaining a deeper appreciation for his life and legacy. It was a meaningful and unexpected addition to our journey.
Of course, this was also Anna’s first Junior Ranger activity and badge on the trip.

For lunch, we visited Jethro’s BBQ in Iowa City, where we enjoyed a delicious feast of smoky, tender barbecue dishes that left us fully satisfied. With our bellies full, we continued our journey and made our way to the picturesque Amana Colonies. Here, we had the delightful opportunity to explore the Tannenbaum Forest Festival, an enchanting event that brought the holiday spirit to life. The festival showcased beautifully decorated Christmas trees, festive lights, and charming holiday displays, creating a magical atmosphere that left us in awe. It was a perfect way to immerse ourselves in the holiday cheer and added a memorable touch to our road trip.
